Younger sea ice, or first-year ice, is shown in a dark shade of blue while the ice that is four years old or older is shown as white. The animation shows the seasonal variability of the ice, growing in the Arctic winter and melting in the summer. In addition, this also shows the changes from year to year. One significant change in the Arctic region in recent years has been the rapid decline in perennial sea ice. Perennial sea ice, also known as multi-year ice, is the portion of the sea ice that survives the summer melt season. Perennial ice may have a life-span of nine years or more and represents the thickest component of the sea ice; perennial ice can grow up to four meters thick. By contrast, first year ice that grows during a single winter is generally at most two meters thick. Note that data for the sea ice age is not available along the coastlines. The region where data is not available is shown in a dark lavender color.             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue (blue/green gingham shirt and tan mask) and Senator John Cornyn blue gingham shirt and blue bandana mask) tour the Houston Food Bank, one of USDA’s partners in the Houston area helping feed Americans in need through various nutrition programs administered by the USDA Food, including USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS); additionally the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Farmers to Families Food Box Program has distributed nearly 40 million food boxes in support of American farmers and families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, on July 16, 2020, in Houston, TX. Houston Food Bank CEO Brian Green (black shirt and cap) and Chief Impact Officer Nicole Lander (red dress) lead them on a tour of the warehouse operations that include kitting (boxing and bagging) of food commodities by volunteers and servicemen of the Texas National Guard, and meal service preparation for after school food programs in the Keegan Kitchen. From <a href="https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/3487" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/3487</a> : Three fifths of the Earth's surface is under the ocean, and the ocean floor is as rich in detail as the land surface with which we are familiar. This animation simulates a drop in sea level that gradually reveals this detail. As the sea level drops, the continental shelves appear immediately. They are mostly visible by a depth of 140 meters, except for the Arctic and Antarctic regions, where the shelves are deeper. The mid-ocean ridges start to appear at a depth of 2000 to 3000 meters. By 6000 meters, most of the ocean is drained except for the deep ocean trenches, the deepest of which is the Marianas Trench at a depth of 10,911 meters.
